With many office-based employees working at home regularly on a long-term basis, they often have confidential documents in their possession – and these must be disposed of properly when necessary by shredding, which provides opportunities for resellers.
With hybrid working now a long-term trend in this country, office workers expect – and are expected – to do everything they can at home as they can in the office, and this includes handling sensitive documents as and when required.
But this also means those documents need to be disposed of properly when they have reached the end of their useful life. The consequences of a data breach from not doing this can be heavy in terms of fines, lost business and reputational damage.

The risk from physical documents remains significant, Victoria adds. “Fraud continues to account for a large proportion of UK crime, and not all fraud is cyber-related,” she says.

As hybrid working means confidential documents may now be handled in multiple locations, secure shredding has become an essential part of protecting data and maintaining compliance.”

Durability is increasingly important too, with buyers placing more value on products backed by solid warranties.”
Victoria agrees that customers are increasingly looking for machines that combine strong security, along with convenience and ease of use. “Research shows that anti-jam technology, quiet operation and longer run times are among the most sought-after features,” she says.
“There is also a clear trend towards more compact designs, as users want products that fit comfortably into home offices and shared living spaces without being bulky or intrusive.
“In addition, demand for higher-security shredders is growing, with more users opting for micro cut technology to provide greater peace of mind when disposing of sensitive documents.”
Best shredders for hybrid workers
Victoria notes that the best shredder for a hybrid worker depends on the level of confidentiality required. “For most home office users, a cross-cut shredder provides an excellent balance of security and performance, reducing an A4 sheet into around 400 pieces and making reconstruction extremely difficult,” she says.

Victoria advises resellers to focus on three key areas: security, productivity and convenience. “Security remains the primary consideration, so it is important to explain the differences between cross-cut and micro cut shredding and help customers choose the appropriate level of protection for their needs,” she says.
“From a productivity perspective, features such as auto feed technology can save users considerable time by allowing large stacks of paper to be shredded automatically. Anti-jam technology and longer run times also contribute to a smoother user experience.
“Finally, compact designs and innovations such as bin rotation technology can help customers maximise capacity while minimising the space required, making modern shredders particularly well suited to home office environments.”
Future
Both commentators are optimistic about buying trends for confidential shredders over the coming 12-18 months staying strong. “Hybrid working has become a long-term reality for many organisations, creating an ongoing need for secure document disposal at home and in the office,” Victoria says.
“At the same time, businesses and individuals continue to manage large volumes of paper records despite wider digitalisation efforts. As awareness of data security risks grows, customers are increasingly prioritising secure shredding solutions and seeking higher levels of protection through technologies such as micro cut shredding.
“We also expect continued demand for smarter, more efficient products that offer enhanced security, greater automation, quieter performance and compact designs suitable for modern working environments.”
Annaliese agrees that ongoing hybrid work will help to keep demand for confidential shredders steady. “A refresh cycle is likely as users upgrade to more reliable, better-performing machines,” she adds.
“Buyers will continue to prioritise trusted brands, strong warranties, and practical features suited to home use. Overall, shredding is becoming a routine part of home workspace setup rather than a one-off purchase.”
