Laserfiche: new AI Automated Document Tags to remove ‘Dark Data’

Laserfiche has announced new AI features to its AI data capture tool Smart Fields, designed to make it easier to turn “messy” files into useful business information.

With these changes, Smart Fields is purported to recognise what kind of document it is looking at, such as an invoice, tax form, or student transcript, and label it correctly, without human input.

Instead of relying on complicated rules or manual setup, users simply describe what they want using plain language. The system uses AI to understand the request, extract key information, and apply the right labels and tags. It can also add informational or security tags to documents automatically, helping organisations protect sensitive data and keep files easy to find.

According to Laserfiche, this means documents can be organised, routed, and secured in seconds, even when dealing with large volumes of information.

“Success in today’s AI-driven landscape is defined by speed to insight,” said Michael Allen, chief technology officer at Laserfiche. “By using AI in Laserfiche content management, we are transforming organizations’ digital repositories into active engines for business intelligence. Smart Fields allows users to bypass the friction of manual data entry, saving time for more high-value decision-making.”

Moving Beyond Traditional Document Capture

Older document capture systems often require technical expertise and complex configuration. Smart Fields, first introduced in April 2025, was designed to remove those barriers by letting users interact with the system in everyday language.

The latest update adds two major capabilities:

  • Automatic document classification, which identifies document types and matches them to the appropriate template.
  • Intelligent auto-tagging, which applies predefined informational or security tags as documents are added to the system.

Customers are already using Smart Fields to extract information from financial documents, vendor forms, and legal contracts. Tasks that once took days, weeks or months can now be completed almost instantly.

Improving Security and Efficiency

The new features can:

  • Eliminate manual sorting by classifying documents as soon as they are uploaded
  • Automatically protect sensitive information through security tagging
  • Trigger workflows, such as approvals or retention schedules, without custom coding
  • Address a common problem: large volumes of “dark data,” or content that’s stored but never fully used.

Andrea Malick, principal advisory director at Info-Tech Research Group, comments:

“The true value of AI in the enterprise is its ability to shed light on dark data, or what Laserfiche calls ‘ghost content. By automating the foundational work of document organization, organizations can finally bridge the gap between content silos and actionable insights, making sure that information is not just stored, but systematically ready for the AI era.”
