Xerox: Towards a more Sustainable Future

For Xerox, sustainability isn’t just part of its strategy, it is integral to everything the company does, from designing products to delivering services as the business leads the way to a net zero future.

For Xerox, being a leader in its markets also means the company has great responsibility. Not only designing and manufacturing innovative products for international markets, but also helping protect employees, clients and the wider environment.

At Xerox, environmental responsibility has been core to the company’s operations for almost 50 years, and it will continue to be in the future as it works towards their carbon reduction targets outlined in their net zero roadmap. Indeed, Xerox is on target to reach net zero emissions by 2040.

Workplace innovations

Xerox is at the forefront of sustainability-focused solutions for the workplace, from AI-powered, energy-efficient capabilities to remanufacturing more than 1.7 million toner cartridges in 2024, averaging 90% reuse by weight.

The company itself is making great strides in reducing environmental impact; in 2024, Xerox achieved a 59% reduction in Scope 1 and 2 greenhouse gas emissions (compared to a 2016 baseline).

This is extended through the products it sells. Together with Lexmark, which Xerox acquired earlier this year, the company is expanding its impact across the print life cycle – delivering smarter technologies that help clients to work more efficiently and reduce their environmental impact.

This includes using advanced energy efficient technologies and components with long life spans, which can also increasingly be reclaimed once a device has reached the end of its life and therefore avoid going into landfill. Indeed, since 2009, more than 600,000 tons of equipment, parts and supplies have been diverted from landfill thanks to the company’s work.

AI is also at the heart of the company’s innovation, helping to simplify processes, boost productivity and drive innovation across the organisation. This includes things like predictive analytics and intelligent document processing.

Managed print innovations

Xerox Managed Print Services (MPS) Advanced Analytics gives users the power to closely monitor their emissions and take practical action to reduce them. It can also demonstrate to customers and suppliers their environmental work – showing measurable outcomes aids transparency but also shows the meaningful differences that are being made. This was developed in response to customer demand as increasing numbers of organisations want to measure environmental impact. For instance, through using remote service, Xerox MPS customers saved 3.5 tons of carbon emissions in 2024.

Additionally, Xerox launched its Verified Carbon Neutrality Service for its MPS portfolio. Through the Advanced Analytics platform, this service empowers users to claim carbon neutrality by reducing, offsetting and reporting the Co2e emissions of their print fleet.

Circular principles

Xerox continues to embed circular economy principles into its processes across the company, whether that is reusing process waste in our workplaces, or devising products with greater lifespans and more sustainable life cycles.

Remanufacturing is also becoming more significant, and Xerox certified pre-owned devices provide up to 90% Co2e savings in the raw material and manufacturing stages of the product lifecycle.

Clear mission

As Xerox Chief Executive Officer, Steve Bandrowczak, said in the Xerox 2025 Corporate Social Responsibility Report, Together for Tomorrow: “As we look to the future, we remain deeply dedicated to helping protect the environment. Our mission is clear: reduce our impact, enable others to do the same, and contribute to a more sustainable future.”

While Xerox has made great strides towards becoming a more sustainable company – and helping customers to become more sustainable too – it is clear there is more work to do, and Xerox is committed to doing that.

With the effects of climate change being discussed at the recent COP30 summit in Brazil, it highlighted how it is an issue that affects everyone. Xerox has, and will continue to, lead on this issue and make better products that also help to reduce climate impact – and that is good for everyone.
